As part of our Water Wise Farming programme, we are working with United Utilities to provide farmers with free hire of a weed wiper and aerator.
The weed wiper enables herbicide to be applied directly to weeds, saving the amount of herbicide needed and helping to prevent spray drift into nearby river systems. The aerator, meanwhile, reduces compaction caused by livestock within the top third of the soil profile (8-9 inches), and it can be used on shallower soils where other interventions are not possible. A reduction in soil compaction, allows better infiltration of water and reduced overland flows, reducing pollutants being washed into the river during heavy rainfall.
The equipment is stored in Bala from where it needs to be picked up. The machinery can be hired for three days. A spraying certificate (PA2) is needed for use of the weed wiper, and the aerator is suitable for anyone with a tractor over 100hp. Pass on the word to any farmers you know who could benefit!
