Location: Llangollen, North Wales.

Salary: £24,943 – £29,101 p.a. subject to experience

Pension: Option of the Rivers Trust pension; Employee contribution of 5% and Employers contribution of 9%.

Reports To: Restoring River Habitat Programme Manager.

About Welsh Dee Trust: A member of the wider rivers trust movement; TheWelsh Dee Trust is a small independent charity working to restore the brooks, streams and rivers of the Dee catchment for both wildlife and people. The Welsh Dee Trust is going through an exciting period of growth and has identified five clear programmes of work to pursue. Our Restoring River Habitat work programme aims to restore natural processes and connectivity of rivers and streams to benefit all species. This is a key programme for the Trust and the successful applicant will play a key role in helping the programme be successful.

Job Overview: The Project Officer will provide support to the Programme Manager and work alongside another officer to deliver habitat restoration projects across the Dee catchment, from Bala to Chester. The role is focused on identifying and delivering habitat improvements, such as in river habitat works, riparian corridor improvement or barrier removal, using contractors, volunteers or staff resources.

The successful applicant will be able to work outdoors in all conditions and have a passion for wildlife and its conservation.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Identify potential habitat works and liaise with landowners to gain agreement
  • Deliver habitat improvements including tree planting, coppicing, in-river habitat improvements and monitoring
  • Manage contractors to deliver large habitat improvement schemes
  • Manage volunteers undertaking practical habitat restoration projects

Knowledge and Experience:


  • Experience managing contractors and volunteers
  • An aptitude for outdoor work
  • An ability to work and communicate with a variety of people
  • Full driving licence


  • Knowledge of river restoration techniques
  • Experience using GIS particularly ArcGIS
  • Experience in freshwater monitoring techniques particularly electrofishing and invertebrate sampling
  • Ability to speak Welsh
